Acknowledgements and Credits
Some of the material in this curriculum was based upon a program of study developed by the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia and the Raleigh County Board of Education in 1985.  The material was updated and expanded by Karen Vuranch.  In addition, information about safety was contributed by Joshua Birchfield, a coal miner at the Kingston mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

For those interested in a participatory experience, The Coal Heritage Trail is a National Scenic Byway. The trail winds its way through the coal fields of Southern West Virginia, from Bluefield at the southern end to Ansted on the northern end. The trail will provide wayside signs and kiosks with information about the culture, heritage and technology of the coal fields.  For more information contact:
