Evaluation:
1. List ways in which coal mining safety has been improved.

2. How did historic disasters affect the development of mine safety standards?

3. What governmental agencies set standards for mine safety?

Activities:

1. In the DVD, Coal Camp Memories, Hallie Marie describes the dangers of working underground.  Discuss her experiences in class and talk about the changes in safety conditions in the mines.

2. Invite a mine inspector to your classroom to talk about safety in the mines.

3. Clip current articles from the newspaper about mine safety and discuss create a bulletin board display.

4. Identify mining disasters in your region and create a memorial for them. -

This can be as simple as an event where the names of those who died are read out loud and songs are sung. Or, it could take the form of a bulletin board that is displayed for a period of time. It could also be a more permanent memorial in a community park.
